After the Studio Tour: How Galisteo and Lamy Fill the Quiet Season

The 38th annual Galisteo Studio Tour ran October 10 and 11, 2026, with open studios in the village and Ranchitos and food trucks back at the Community Center. Today the Community Center's calendar says "Studio Tour cleanup." The published calendars keep going well past that cleanup day. Two small rooms carry the villages through December. Galisteo's Community Center takes weeknights and the first half of December. Lamy's Legal Tender takes Saturday nights and the end of the year. Put their published schedules side by side and you won't find a single date where both have something booked.

Galisteo Keeps a Monday Habit

The Galisteo Community Center is a single 800-square-foot room with a stage. Galisteo residents built it in 1973, giving the money, the design expertise and the labor themselves. Most of its post-tour schedule happens on weeknights:

  • Monday, October 19, 6 p.m.: Music Collective
  • Wednesday, October 21, 6:30 p.m.: Galisteo Community Association board meeting
  • Monday, November 16, 6 p.m.: Music Collective
  • Wednesday, November 18, 6:30 p.m.: GCA board meeting
  • Friday, November 20, 5 p.m.: Galisteo Has Talent

Music Collective falls on the third Monday in both October and November, and the board meets two days later each time. Those are the only two months the posted calendar shows, so it's too early to call this a permanent rotation. For October and November, at least, the pattern repeats exactly.

Things change in December. The Center holds a Holiday Market on Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6, then a holiday breakfast potluck the next Saturday, December 12, at 9:30 a.m. After December 12, the posted calendar is empty through the end of the month.

Saturday Nights Belong to the Legal Tender

Lamy's calendar runs on a different night of the week. The Legal Tender Saloon & Eating House has booked live music for six Saturday evenings between now and the end of the year. Every show runs 6 to 8 p.m.:

  • October 17: Bill Hearne
  • November 7: Jo B and the Linecasters
  • November 21: Hello Darlin'
  • November 28: Felix Gato Peralta Duo
  • December 19: Tios Mios
  • December 26: The Arellano Brothers featuring Kateri Lopez

Allan Affeldt and Murphy O'Brien reopened the restaurant together in 2023. The restaurant's own history page dates the launch to July or August of that year. Ahead of the opening, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported on the planned third reopening, O'Brien's return as Affeldt's partner and on chef Michael Gintert's role in the kitchen.

The current menu includes Hatch green chile stew, a Southwest Caesar, pan-seared trout, shrimp and grits, a house-smoked pork quesadilla, a New Mexico green chile cheeseburger and a 10-ounce New York strip. Dinner reservations go through the restaurant's Tock page. The site doesn't list regular weekly hours, so check the booking page for the night you want rather than assuming the dining room is open.

One Sunday Morning in Lamy

The only daytime event on the Legal Tender's fall calendar is the Fred Harvey Breakfast, Sunday, November 8, from 10 a.m. to noon. It costs $60 per person, tax and gratuity included, with coffee and either a mimosa or a glass of orange juice. Chef Angel Franco's menu has three choices:

  1. Classic Breakfast: scrambled eggs, breakfast chicken sausage, roasted tomato and toast
  2. Biscuits and Gravy: scrambled eggs, pork sausage gravy and buttermilk biscuits
  3. Ricotta Pancakes: blueberry, lemon cream and maple syrup

The breakfast is booked the morning after Jo B and the Linecasters play on Saturday, November 7. That's the only weekend this fall with two Legal Tender events in a row.

Where the Two Calendars Interlock

Put the two schedules in date order and you can see how they fit together. Galisteo's dates fall on Mondays, Wednesdays, one Friday and two December weekends. Lamy's fall on Saturdays plus one Sunday. Here's every public date from now through December, combined:

Date Day Where What
Oct. 17 Saturday Legal Tender, Lamy Bill Hearne, 6–8 p.m.
Oct. 19 Monday Community Center, Galisteo Music Collective, 6 p.m.
Oct. 21 Wednesday Community Center, Galisteo GCA board meeting, 6:30 p.m.
Nov. 7 Saturday Legal Tender, Lamy Jo B and the Linecasters, 6–8 p.m.
Nov. 8 Sunday Legal Tender, Lamy Fred Harvey Breakfast, 10 a.m.–noon
Nov. 16 Monday Community Center, Galisteo Music Collective, 6 p.m.
Nov. 18 Wednesday Community Center, Galisteo GCA board meeting, 6:30 p.m.
Nov. 20 Friday Community Center, Galisteo Galisteo Has Talent, 5 p.m.
Nov. 21 Saturday Legal Tender, Lamy Hello Darlin', 6–8 p.m.
Nov. 28 Saturday Legal Tender, Lamy Felix Gato Peralta Duo, 6–8 p.m.
Dec. 5–6 Saturday–Sunday Community Center, Galisteo Holiday Market
Dec. 12 Saturday Community Center, Galisteo Holiday breakfast potluck, 9:30 a.m.
Dec. 19 Saturday Legal Tender, Lamy Tios Mios, 6–8 p.m.
Dec. 26 Saturday Legal Tender, Lamy Arellano Brothers featuring Kateri Lopez, 6–8 p.m.

That's 14 entries and no overlaps. The tightest stretch is November 20 and 21, when Galisteo Has Talent on Friday evening is followed by Hello Darlin' in Lamy the next night. December splits neatly. Galisteo holds the first two Saturdays with the Holiday Market and the potluck, and its posted calendar ends there. The Legal Tender's two December shows, on the 19th and the 26th, start a week after that. Nobody seems to have coordinated this, and neither venue says anything about the other. The result is still a December with something to do on four separate weekends.

Daylight Between the Dates

Between those evening and morning dates, Dovetail is open every day.

The Santa Fe Conservation Trust bought 300 acres in the Galisteo Basin in 2020, on the former headquarters of Thornton Ranch. It later renamed the property from the Conservation Homestead to Dovetail after hearing from Indigenous stakeholders. Dovetail is at 268 Thornton Ranch Road and is open to the public from dawn to dusk. The Trust posted that construction on the accessible trail began September 15, 2025, and that the trails would reopen before the end of that year. New Mexico Magazine reported that the trail opened in December, which makes this coming season its first full winter.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican's coverage of the build, the half-mile accessible trail is two loops, a shorter path and a longer one that passes the old Thornton house and barn. Rocket Ramps graded and stabilized the path so it's wide enough for mobility devices. Along the way there are rest and shade structures, and flagstone detector strips mark each trail intersection for visually impaired walkers. The work also added parking, including two accessible spaces. Sarah Noss, the Trust's executive director, told the paper that the loop was meant to be "the entrance to the other trails on Dovetail, not a separate, stand-alone trail." That's the reason for the "Go Slow and Say Hello" signs along it.

The loop connects to Dovetail's four miles of trail, which connect to about 50 miles in the Galisteo Basin Preserve. The Preserve's trails page offers offline Avenza maps along with standard ones.

Lamy has one daily fixture of its own. Amtrak's timetable dated October 11, 2026 has the Southwest Chief stopping at Lamy every day, at 12:38 p.m. in one direction and 12:53 p.m. in the other. If you're picking up guests, the Lamy station has no staff, no ticket kiosk and no checked-baggage service. Its waiting room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. That window works for a noon arrival followed by an afternoon at Dovetail. On some Saturdays, like October 17, November 21 or December 19, you could finish the day with dinner and a show at the Legal Tender.

Small rooms post their schedules on their own sites and change them there, so check the Community Center and Legal Tender pages before you head out.

At Darlene Streit - Second Site, we keep track of the Highway 285 villages through the Community Center calendar and the Saturday lineup in Lamy, not just through listings. If you own property out here and want to talk about what that local knowledge could mean for your plans, request a private consultation.
