The high demand for The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs performances by the Santa Fe Opera has resulted in an additional performance being added for August 22, 2017, at 8pm. The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs has garnered national publicity as it tackles one of the most interesting people and minds of the last century, Apple founder Steve Jobs.
It’s not every day that a 20th century visionary is featured in a major opera production. But Steve Jobs, who passed away on October 5, 2011, was well beyond his time. The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs opera explores a bit of that vision in its own visionary form, which includes personal conflicts as well as victories. And, because of that, it has garnished mostly positive reviews so far with all performances selling out to date.
Here’s are some sample critic comments:
“…These motifs and many more equally fascinating passages of music add up to a ninety-minute opera that kept members of the Santa Fe audience on the edges of their seats…” ~ Broadway World
“…It is true to Jobs in being slick. It is true to old-fashioned opera in being sentimental. It is true to Apple in Bates’ applying technology, combining electronica and frisky orchestral music and lyrical vocal lines, in as friendly a way as possible…” ~ Los Angeles Times
“…The music is accessible and sufficiently transparent in its scoring that the words come through with surprising clarity (something that did not happen in the score for Cold Mountain). A major opera? Perhaps not but surely an effective one, with the power to bring an entire audience to its feet…” ~ The Star
“…Exhilarating, moving, shocking, and enlightening in turn, Mason Bates and Mark Campbell’s new opera, The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, premiered at Santa Fe Opera on Saturday night, July 22…” ~ San Francisco Classical Voice
The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs starts at a vital moment in the life of Steve Jobs and circles back to explore the life events and people that shaped one of the most invigorating figures of our time. Some of the things explored in The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs includes his father’s mentorship, Jobs dedication to Buddhism, his relationships, his rise and fall as an executive, and his influential marriage to Laurene Jobs, who helped teach him about the power of human connection. Mason Bates composes this world premiere opera with master librettist Mark Campbell. It captures the buzzing sphere of Silicon Valley with a kinetic electro-acoustic score, an absorbing non-linear narrative, and a high-tech production directed by Kevin Newbury.
