Are you a fan of the Roswell TV series? If your answer was “which one?” then you sound like a long-time fan. The old TV series, Roswell (featuring Dido’s Here with Me as its theme song) originally aired from 1999-2001 (three seasons). In 2018, filming began on a modern-day “reboot” of the original series titled Roswell, New Mexico. Season 1 of the Roswell, New Mexico series filmed in from August 2018 into early 2019. The series premiered on the CW Network on January 15, 2019. The first season consisted of 13 episodes (as did the second season).
The Roswell Reboot Begins
The rebooted Roswell TV series got its start with an investment Warner Bros. Television and production by My So-Called Company, Amblin Television and Bender Brown Productions. Like with the 1999 version, this one was based on the popular Roswell High book series, with some key differences, which was written by Melinda Metz. Here’s how the series was described by Warner Bros. prior to its premiere:
After reluctantly returning to her hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.
If that sounds a little different from the Max and Liz story the first Roswell series told, that’s because it is. To give the show a different vibe, the writers and producers decided to make all the characters adults instead of high school students. Here’s a look at the trailer:

Filming Locations for Roswell, New Mexico
With the name “Rosewell” you would think that the series was filmed on location – Roswell, New Mexico. That’s not the case, however, as filming for the show actually took place in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico as well as Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Nevada.
Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber was thrilled that Roswell, New Mexico filmed in Santa Fe.
“We’re very pleased to have Roswell shooting in the city and surrounding areas of Santa Fe,” said Webber. “Warner Bros. in particular has been a long and trusted partner as we’ve built this industry in the region, so we are happy to keep building that partnership and creating jobs in our community.”
The Future of Roswell, TV Series
Roswell Season 3 got a green light from the CW. However, in July 2020, the creator of the TV show, Carina Adly MacKenzie, unexpectedly quit due to “fundamental differences” with the studio and direction the show is going.
