Brownell Howland

One of the oldest and most historically rich neighborhoods in all of Santa Fe.

Welcome to Brownell Howland

One of the oldest and most historically rich neighborhoods in all of Santa Fe, the Brownell Howland real estate offers a beautifully rustic and luxurious setting. The neighborhood derives its name from two of its first out-of-state homeowners – Eleanor Brownell and Alice Howland – a sophisticated duo who moved to Santa Fe from Pennsylvania and founded the renowned Shipley School back in the early 1900s. They also fortunately engaged the legendary architect John Gaw Meem to design their home, which now is honored with a designation on the National Historic Register.

Today, their namesake district is as charming as it was when they resided there: the meandering streets are lined with trees and coyote fences, and most Brownell Howland homes feature Santa Fe's cherished adobe walls. It’s easy to imagine that one’s in the country, not the heart of the city with this neighborhood's charming guest cottages, horse stables, landscaped gardens, and generous acreage.

Ensconced as it is in the heart of Santa Fe’s northern edge, there are still plenty of views: of the Sangre de Cristo, the Jemez, and the Sandia mountain ranges. The Santa Fe Opera is a short drive, as are the Santa Fe Ski Basin and the Santa Fe National Forest. And Brownell Howland itself is all around, just waiting with arts and culture only minutes away. Canyon Road, art galleries, museums, shopping, restaurants, and more are just as nearby and ready to enjoy. Contact Darlene Streit to find houses & homes for sale in Brownell Howland.
